How To Set Up Your WordPress Theme

Introduction: The directions below may seem a little complicated, but once you go through this process one time and set up the FTP program, you will be able to upload and implement new themes or plugins with ease in less than 5 minutes!

Step 1 - Set up your blog according to the instructions given at the WordPress Blog Setup page.

Step 2 - Download the theme you want to your computer. You can use one of my Free Church Themes or any other WordPress theme you find on the internet.

Step 3 - Download and install an FTP program. You will need this to upload your theme to the correct server. I found a free FTP program that worked fine called Core FTP. I have a tutorial for Core FTP shown in the following steps.

Step 4 - Open the Core FTP program and enter information as shown below. For Host you use your domain name without any http:// or www. For the Username and Password, you use the same ones that you chose when you got your hosting.

Step 5 - On the right side of the screen you need to double click on the internet folder public_html. This opens the folder that is on your server. The left side represents files on your computer.

Step 6 - Double click on the folder wp-content, as shown below. If you installed your blog in the top directory, this folder will be visible after Step 5. If you installed your blog in a sub folder, then you will have to double click on that sub folder first to see this wp-content folder.

Step 7 - On the left side, find the folder containing your new theme and configure the screen so it is showing. Then drag and drop the entire folder on the left into the theme folder on the right.

Step 8 - To implement your theme, follow the instructions shown at the WordPress Theme Change Tutorial. After Step 7, your new theme will be visible in this interface and a single click will activate it.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Make sure your blog gets indexed! To insure this, log in to your blog, go to the dashboard, and select Settings, and then Privacy, and then check the box as shown below.
